I am new ED for a tiny non-profit in Northern California. It's been around for four years - but the former ED never gathered data or outcomes. The non-profit I worked for before - we had one built for us at a cost. Anyone have some inexpensive suggestions for software I could purchase to input data for outcomes for grant writing? We will need donor info but that's not pressing right now..I am thinking MS Access might be the least expensive - I'll just have to create the data sets.... but wanted to know if anyone else had any ideas..

Hi Annie. Welcome to TechSoup!
This article from the National Council of Nonprofits on outcomes tracking and measurement has lots of great resources, and this article from the Madison Community Foundation has a few.
As far as which tool to use, your capacity to build and support a database -- or to pay someone to do it -- is a big factor to consider. I don't see an Access template, so I think you'd have to start from scratch if you use Access. A simpler option might be starting with Excel. The Michigan Council of Foundations has a free grant tracking form here. Another option -- but one that could require money and consulting help -- would be the Salesforce grant management solution. The Grant Professionals Association might have more suggestions.
Please let us know what you settle on and why.

I just finished developing an outcomes database with MS Access for Turning Point a drug and rehab facility. If you would like I would be glad to meet with you online via GoToMeeting to show you what I created for then to help you clarify your thoughts and explore what is possible with MS Access.

I just worked on a project to look at this issue, where the organization was looking to replace Social Solutions ETO- I won't go into that. and found one that I thought that was most cost effective is called charity tracker. It definitely does NOT do it all, and it does stuff that I felt was extraneous, but it was a simple, cost effective way of measuring outcomes. YOu may wan tto take a look at it.
