Thank you Paul. I do appreciate your help. (I did go to the blog, but there were 400+ pages and no way to search
Given that you're on techsoup, you must have bought your Office copy via some non-profit for the cheap price here, so you might be better off just biting the bullet and buying another new license.
Alternatively, do you know about
It's a free same-functionality open-source version of the programs that you pay for in M$ Office, and it'll read and write the Office formats.
Give that one a try before you buy another copy. Also, the LibreOffice programs don't have that stupid ribbon along the top that M$ thinks is an improvement.
Believe it or not, I found the fix quite by accident.
I got tired of monkeying around with the issue, so I just ordered a Standard MSOffice 16 from Techsoup to replace my MSOffice Pro Plus. I received the fulfillment email, logged into Volume Licensing, clicked on "licenses and keys" to find the key for my new product. Of course it isn't there yet, but I did see in the list the MSOffice Pro Plus 2016, so I clicked on the key just for the heck of it. Guess what? There was a different key than the original one I had.
So, I opened up a word document and got the same stupid box asking me to activate the software (with only ONE day left). I clicked on CHANGE KEY, copied the new key into it, and VOILA! Everything works fine.
It was so simple - only took me two minutes. I wish I had known.
I hope this helps someone else.
